[WEEKEND READS] where I struggle with my second reading slump of the year

#currentlyreading
Hello,

I really, really can't wait for April to end. While I am a bit more free compared to March, I've been pre-occupied with revisions and revision consultations. But I'm not stressed like before. I've been sleeping a lot, actually. However, because of that no-sleep March I had, I now found myself in a reading slump. I've been reading King's Cage and The Picture of Dorian Gray for a couple of weeks now.

Holy Week just ended and while I was supposed to tackle my tbr pile then, I ended up watching anime. It was a great break from reading, to be honest, but I still can't get my reading pace back. I don't even know why. I'll still stick to the two books I'm finishing but I added another book to the mix and I'm actually getting absorbed in it. I hope it continues.

During my anime binge watching this past week, I finished: (1) 3-gatsu no Lion (slice of life, coming of age, shogi, light anime, and unexpectedly SHAFT* -- which means it's not very SHAFT-like); (2) Sakamoto desu ga? (slice of life, comedy, totally random funny stuff, standalone episodes); (3) SHIROBAKO (slice of life, inspirational, new fave!, anime about making anime, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!); (4) Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (harem, not my thing, very SHAFT tho -- unusual cuts and framing and inserts); Masamune-kun no Revenge (slice of life, romance, about revenge DUH!, totally stereotype characters, nothing new tbh, but still quite entertaining).

*SHAFT = anime production company responsible for the Monogatari Series, Nisekoi, Madoka Magica, etc.

recent reads
Duels & Deception | Cindy Anstey
YA historical romance. Regency era. I reviewed this for a blog tour. It was a fun and light read -- full of witty lines, great characters, great and vivid writing. Cindy Anstey is definitely an author I'm reading more of! Review Here!!

current reads

King's Cage (Red Queen #3) | Victoria Aveyard
I'm over a hundred pages in and I'm okay with it. I was disappointed with the dual perspective though. At this point, I don't think it's actually necessary aside from making the book less boring and more likable if you actually care about the people in the Scarlet Guard which I don't, by the way. I'm all about Maven here BUT I kind of don't like where this is going (it's giving me that Ignite Me feels at some parts. Shatter Me SPOILER: where Warner, the supposed 'bad-guy' becomes the 'good-guy' and love interest of Juliette). I hope I'm wrong though.

The Night Stalker (Detective Erika Foster #2) | Robert Bryndza
I read and reviewed The Girl in the Ice last year and gave it a 5/5 stars. LOVED IT THAT MUCH! Books 3 and 4 are out and I NEED to catch up on this series! I'm around 30% up already and I was easily absorbed in it! I can't believe it took me so long to finally pick this up!

The Picture of Dorian Gray | Oscar Wilde
This is our first book for our book club -- one that me and my sisters made. We've never had bookclubs before so we're totally new to just sitting down and discussing a book. Tips, anyone? ANYWAY, I've only gone through five chapters. I'm such a slow reader, I know. But I got a bit bored ('cause ya know me and classics aren't very good friends). But I admit that it's quite interesting especially Lord Henry's twisted mind.

next reads

Bombay Blood | Ray Ronan
Medical thriller. I got a copy for review. This is about an organ trading industry. Gives me that Unwind (Neal Shusterman) feels. I hope it will have a great combination of horror and mystery and thriller!

Scythe (Arc of a Scythe #1) | Neal Shusterman
This is my most anticipated book of 2016 and I never had a chance to have it. Can't find it in the bookstore before but now I have it!! I HAVE IT! I got it last month! Found it in the bookstore. Grabbed it. Bought it. Now, it's sitting peacefully in my shelf. Will surely read it next!

  1. I've been in a reading slump for the past few weeks as well, I only started reading again at the beginning of this week. It seems I go from one extreme to the other though, I didn't read anything for weeks and then I read 5 books in one week😂! I have exams coming up in May though so I really need to be revising more than I have been. Scythe is one I've been eyeing up for a while so I can't wait to see what you think of it!

    1. I know what you mean. It's quite difficult to get to your usual reading pace when you stop and get caught up with so many things. I hope we get that usual pace back rather than some weird extremities. hahaha. Also, I'm really hoping to get around Scythe by early May! :D

  2. Sorry to hear you are in a reading slump! I just had spring break and it really allowed me to relax and get back into reading. But I think it is good sometimes to just take a break and chill out. I really want to get back into anime! I only have watched 4 or 5, but really liked it. I hope King's Cage gets better for you. I haven't read Red Queen yet. :P Have a great week czai!

    1. My graduation is right around the corner so I'm really hoping to have a week or two to relax and read before immersing myself to the horrific world of adulting. I hope you get back to anime!! I really need someone to chat with! If you need recommendations you can always go message me on twitter or email or whatever else out there. haha. Honesty, the Red Queen series isn't really super worth it. I ended up sticking to it though because I like a certain character. Thanks, Genni!

  3. I hate reading slumps but they happen. I had planned to get lots of reading done over the holiday weekend but instead didn't feel like reading much at all. It happens. I hope you get over your slump soon. I am really curious about Scythe. I have seen some great reviews for that one.

    1. Thanks, Carole. Slumps are terrible. Glad I've been going through my ebooks quite fast lately though but I haven't finished any physical books which saddens me. I've literally read nothing but great things about Scythe. I think I only come across 4-5 reviews which is a really great thing :D

  4. I'm going through a bit of a slump, as well. I picked up a few library books last week, but nothing is appealing to me right now, so I just started re-reading one of my favorite books. Hopefully that will get me on a good path!

  5. Oh yea my Netflix binges have been keeping me from my books, but I'm just starting to get back into the swing of things... sorta. :) Looks like you did some good reading and you have some good books coming up! :)

    1. I'm really pumping myself up so that I can get back my reading pace. I ended up watching a lot of anime (not sure if it's a good thing or not, hahaha).
