JUNE WRAPUP (aka the month of my successful book buying ban)

June Reads!
Hi,

June ended up being a fantastic reading month. The Queen of the Tearling almost put me on a slump but I'm so glad I stopped it early on. I'm also on a nice reviewing roll recently which is super great. I've drafted down two reviews already so I'm most likely good for the upcoming week 😊

Now for my job hunting update, remember that company who contacted me I mentioned last week? The one that I'm super nervous about that they might brush me off or something? THEY. FINALLY. CALLED. ME. JUST NOW. I'm IN! I'm going to have an orientation with them on Monday THEN I'll start mid-July! I'm both excited and nervous! But also very thankful! OMG!

books read

The Dirty Book Club started the month right for me. I LOVED IT! It still had that Lisi Harrison style of writing but with an adult protagonist! I cannot wait for her next work!! Thunderhead was said to be waaay better than Scythe but that was not the case for me. I loved Thunderhead but not as much as its prequel. The politics was pretty strong on this one and the ending was such a 2nd book cliffhanger style. UGH! Authority took me forever because it wasn't as exciting as Annihilation. The narration was quite boring and the ending was, also, such a 2nd book cliffhanger. *more frustration right here* The Vegetarian was really what I expected it to be. I was a bit baffled in the beginning but as I read more of it, I understand the story and get sucked into it. The Red Umbrella is one of those books that didn't immediately capture me but I ended up loving *rtc* I Found You left me a tad bit disappointed *rtc* Platinum End, vol5 wasn't any different than the previous volumes. It still wasn't as mind blowing as Ohba & Obata's previous series. Three Dark Crowns left me disappointed and I'm disappointed of myself. lol. Kendare Blake isn't for me.

books hauled

Deposed by David Barbaree | Exposed (Dr. Schwartzman #3) by Danielle Girard | My Real Name Is Hanna by Tara Lynn Masih

All of there are review copies. I received Deposed from Bonnier Zaffre for review. It was my first time requesting from them and I was so glad they gave me a physical copy (which I have to admit I did not expect!!). So, thanks so much to Bonnier Zaffre for Deposed!! I downloaded Expose from NetGalley just because I have the first two books and it's a crime thriller if I'm not mistaken?? My Real Name is Hanna is also from NetGalley and that comparison to Between Shades of Gray had me clicking the download button faster than I can say cake.

June to-be-read

Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy | The Missing Ones (D.I. Lottie Parker #1) by Patricia Gibney | In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park | My Real Name Is Hanna by Tara Lynn Masih | The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters

  1. Ah congratulations on the job! That's fantastic! :D It looks like you had a pretty great reading month, also! I'm still pretty interested in picking up The Dirty Book Club, and I still desperately need to read Thunderhead. I've been mainly hearing people like it more than Thunderhead, but I'm glad to see your opinion that Scythe was better. It seems hard to beat Scythe, in my opinion haha. Looks like some good books on the TBR as well. :)

    1. Thanks, Jordan! :D I hope you read The Dirty Book Club! It's probably one of the chick lits I'd recommend to everyone now, hahaha. Scythe was really fantastic and I really think Neal Shusterman is always amazing in creating words thus his first books always stick better to me. But all of his works are great, in my opinion :)

    1. Thank you, Lily!! I really do hope I enjoy it. It's nothing compared to my previous workplace but I look forward to enjoying working there :)
I didn't buy a single book last month which was a real accomplishment for me. Buying bans are always difficult, to be honest. Especially with all the amazing releases each week.

  3. Congratulations Czai, that's so exciting with work!! Awesome that you've read a few great books too, The Vegetarian is definitely one that I plan to read when I can get through my massive TBR. I've been hesitant to pick up Kendare Blake, the Three Dark Crowns series seems so hit or miss. I've been wanting some new fantasy to read but eh.

My reading has been not so good for June, I hit a slump after too many non fiction books I think haha. That and I've been crazy busy at work and a new relationship. ^^;; Hopefully July will treat me better with some exciting fiction reads!

    1. Thanks, Jamie! The Vegetarian started quite difficult for me but as a whole, it was a really great read! The Three Dark Crowns is a real hit or miss. I'd say go pick up more people are inclined to.

Your new relationship sounds good if it's keeping you busy :D I hope work gets better for you. Here's wishing you a great reading month this July!

  4. Congrats on the job, Czai! That's fantastic news. :) I was trying to decide if I should continue with the Southern Reach trilogy, but I don't think I will. I thought Annihilation was only okay, and had some issues with the narration. I just don't think that series is for me, unfortunately! Kendare Blake isn't for me either! I didn't enjoy her previous series that much, and I don't think I'll ever read Three Dark Crowns. I've heard it is pretty slow, and I need fast pace in my fantasy!

I hope you have a wonderful July and love your new job! Congrats again. :)

    1. Thank you, Genni!! I'm sorry the narration didn't work for you. It was actually one of my fave aspects of the books. The sequel wasn't as good for me though. But I will still finish the series. I read Kendare Blake's first series and it didn't work out for me. I tried Three Dark Crowns just because it's highly recommend to me and it sounds good. But that'll be the last Kendare Blake I'll read.

  5. Looks like you read some pretty great books this month. In June I focused on rereading the Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger and I finally got around to reading The Cruel Prince by Holly Black which was fantastic! I still need to get around to reading Three Dark Crowns, I hear it's good. Hopefully I can read it eventually. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I've seen the Keeper of the Lost Cities series around. I also read great things about Holly Black's new series. I've been considering it because of all the positive thoughts. I hope Three Dark Crowns works better for you. It was good but it felt slow for me. Happy reading, Abby!
