[TOP TEN TUESDAY] 8 Books that Prove I'm a Black Sheep

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at the Broke and the Bookish
Hello,

This week's prompt is: Books I Loved Less/More Than I Thought I Would (recently or all time) -- or you could do something like books I like more/less than everyone else. Explanations aside, as you have guessed, I'm doing something like: Books I Liked LESS than Everyone Else.

Don't hate me, okay? --not gonna say this every time I talk about a book. I'm just going to talk about why it didn't work for me, okay? Are we good? All of these are obviously a case of it's-not-you-it's-me, so don't hate.

Let's go then!

*Photo Description: books I unhauled last year.

Anna Dressed in Blood & Girl of Nightmares | Kendare Blake.
I bought this duology together because people were raving about this. And I'm like, I've never read something horror or something with ghosts as characters or something. Gotta try them. AND surprise!, it didn't work for me. Aside from the fact that Cas and Anna has an obvious romance going on (which didn't exactly work for me), Cas's narration didn't working for me. He sounds quite feminine for me, sorry (not being sexist or anything).
Winter (the Lunar Chronicles #4) | Marissa Meyer
Before you scream at me and enumerate your points on why Winter is the best thing ever, I have to tell you that I LOVE it. Just not as much as you did. I see Winter almost on everyone's fave list and while I love it, I just can't add it to my fave because I didn't like the uprising parts of the story -- it felt forced and highly convenient. And I like dystopian novels and the planning and plotting their uprising is my fave part and I think that it just didn't felt strong for me here.
The Eye of Minds (the Mortality Doctrine #1) | James Dashner
I've never read any other book by James Dashner. I was so scared to read The Maze Runner ('cause hyped books make me stay away from them. I know, the hype gives a different effect on me. Weird.). ANYWAY, the Eye of Minds didn't work for me. It didn't absorbed me. It bored the hell out of me (I know. Weird because it's supposed to be action-packed or something. My mind just didn't ride that hacking and switching from one game to another. Sorry.

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) | Sarah J. Maas
I grabbed this because I enjoyed Throne of Glass and everyone be like: it's better than ToG!! aSDFGHJKL!!!. Sadly, it didn't work for me. I like it but I don't love it. I'm not even motivated to pick up A Court of Mist and Fury and the longer I hold off reading it, the lesser I feel interested. My sister enjoyed it though, so I might end up giving it to her.
Shadow and Bone (the Grisha #1) | Leigh Bardugo
This is my first high fantasy novel. I tried it because Lauren deStefano keeps on shoving it into my face: like read this beauty!! or something like that. I can't remember, okay? But I liked her books then (by that I mean Wither and Perfect Ruin, now I don't even know why I liked them then but I might still read her new YA novel. who knows?). But you know, I realized that fantasy isn't really my thing. I wish it is because everyone loves fantasy. and I don't.
My Heart and Other Black Holes | Jasmie Warga
Nothing against this beauty. I think that the idea was unique but the story was such a cliche, it didn't move me. Sucks, I know. Because other people whose opinions I strongly trust, loved this. And as much as I'd love to love this, I was just not move.
A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) | Claudia Gray
I ranted about this book a couple of years back. I like the idea of parallel universe but I think that while it graciously worked for me on anime, it doesn't really work for me when it's in books. Then there's the romance which overwhelmed the story (for me, that is). It pained me, really, because I want this series on my shelf because THAT COVER!!

HOW ABOUT YOU
What books did everyone love but you ended up disliking or feeling 'meh'? Do we have anything similar? Do you ever share unpopular opinions with everyone? (honestly, I always feel scared of sharing things like this)

let's connect!

  1. Great list! I wanted to read Anna Dressed in Blood too but didn't cause I just didn't get to it LOL. I do the same thing, I pass on the over hyped books, cause I know that equals a lot of expectations from the books and I end up not liking them so I just choose to not read them.

    1. I usually let the hype go before I actually read the book. I also don't want to be the black sheep and point out why it wasn't even worth my time. Thanks for the follow! Just followed back on both! :D

  2. I'm a bit more partial to Scarlet, to be honest. So don't feel bad. :D

    1. Same. But I generally blame my dislike for Scarlet on that one. Thanks, Joy :)

    1. ohgosh, thank the stars I'm not the only one. I find it too difficult to find people who didn't enjoy ACOTAR than those who didn't enjoy ToG. ohwell.

  4. Yeah definitely seeing some favorites on this list! But it's okay! I say it a lot, especially today, but every book is not for every one! Like I was curious about ACOTAR and was afraid I might not like it because I really really did not like Throne of Glass and yet everyone raves about that series and like you said they said it was better than that one. So here I'm thinking it will mean that I really won't like it. The opposite turned out to be true! I loved that one and I just finished the sequel today and it was even better too! But yeah I can still totally understand how hyped books fail to live up to our expectations!

    1. Thanks for understanding. I haven't exactly caught up on the Throne of Glass series but I actually like what I've read so far. Also, hyped books are scary as hell. I can't stay away from them though so I just hold them off until the hype is (kind of) done.

  5. I read anna dressed in blood a long time ago and I think I liked it but I honestly can't even remember anything about it so it can't of been that good...I read my heart and other black holes for the bookentine read-a-thon and really enjoyed it. I did find it difficult to read though, it was really raw and I had to keep taking a break from it because it was emotionally draining me. Sorry to hear it didn't impress you though! Great choices!

    1. I know people who loved My Heart and Other Black Holes. It just didn't work for me. I think the female main character didn't feel strong for me. It's nice to know you enjoyed it though. Thanks, Kirsty :)

  6. I didn't care much for My Heart and Other Black Holes either. I love fantasy, but I definitely understand it not being your thing. It's not for everyone.

    1. Someone told me it's like a hit or miss. Guess we're on the miss part. Thanks for understanding, Lori. I've always wanted to get into fantasy. Maybe I still haven't read the right book. I still have a couple of fantasy books on my tbr at the moment.

  7. I listened to the audiobook of The Eye of Minds - the production was pretty good on it. :)

  8. I love the Lunar Chronicles, but I do agree that everything resolves itself rather too nicely. I mean, I can't complain because sometimes I actually appreciate it when authors don't try to rip your heart out, but I get your point.

    1. Thanks for understanding, Alicia. I still made my favorites because it ended the series nicely for everyone. And the romance is just too cute!! Especially Kai + Cinder && Thorne + Cress! :D

  9. I have disliked so many popular books! Sometimes it feels like the more popular the book the more I don't like it xD
