My Year in Books 2018

Hi,

Since it's already 2019, instead of doing a December wrap up, I decided to just do a 2018 wrap up. Esther @ Bite Into Books tagged me to post my Goodreads Year in Books.

I like Goodreads's yearly summaries and generally the nerd-iness of the numbers. I added a few stuff below just for a personal count. A reminder for myself on how much I've been spending on books and not exactly reading them. Really hoping I can get through my reading goals this year including this Beat the Backlist Challenge!

I read 16,972 pages across 57 books
AVERAGE LENGTH: 297 pages

SHORTEST BOOK (63 pages)
LONGEST BOOK (644 pages)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium #1) by Stieg Larsson

MOST POPULAR READ - 5,604,836 people also read
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling
LEAST POPULAR READ - 192 people also read
Platinum End, Vol. 6 by Tsugumi Ohba

MY AVERAGE RATING FOR 2018: 3.7

HIGHEST RATED ON GOODREADS
4.55 average

Books Acquired
Bought - 32
Gifted/Given - 28
eARC - 8

Since leaving my work as a Book Specialist, my spending on books lessened. As expected. I spent most on September though which is also very expected because it was the month of #MIBF2018. I spent around 5,000 Php or around $250 on books in two days. Although I also had 4 months of not buying any books :)

Most of the books I was given was during the first quarter of the year because that was my last few months at my Book Shop work and I got a good amount of free finished copies and a few ARCs from the Book Shop. Other than that, my bestfriend would give me a book every now and then.

My year on eARC is pretty good, to be honest. This is also because I was barely on my blog this year :)

#MIBF2018 book haul

Books Read
Owned in 2018 - 21
Owned in 2017 or earlier - 14
Borrowed - 17
eARC - 5

I am hugely disappointed at myself for not reading my books. hahaha. The most I read came from books I recently bought and the next one came from books I borrowed. I also did not reread any books this year which is also a tad bit disappointing.

And obviously, I bought more books than what I can read. I sort of want to change that.

Personal Reading Challenge

To see the books I read for my personal reading challenge, click here!

From all my challenges, the only one I successfully completed was my Goodreads Reading Challenge. The closest to being completed aside from that was my YA Contemporary reading goals which I read 9 out of 10 books. Others, I just miserably failed.

I'll be posting new (and hopefully more realistic) reading goals for 2019 some time in mind-January. I'm still thinking of what would actually be realistic for me AND what I'd really like to read in 2019. And aside from my personal challenge, I'm also participating in a few reading challenges just to... well... challenge myself. I won't put much pressure on myself though. I just want to widen my horizon.

Aside from this, I really want to do a monthly check in on all my goals just so I KNOW I'm doing something about them because one of the things I realized in 2018 is that I suck at keeping track of things like this. I check my reading goals every now and then THEN not really do something about it. Although it's probably because I'm trying to be too 'chill' about my reading. This time around, I want to pressure myself and really get into a lot of books especially those in sitting in my shelf in like forever.

HOW ABOUT YOU GUYS,
How was your reading year in 2018? What are your fave reads? Did you read more than you bought/received books?

let's connect!

  1. You read a lot of your own books though. I read a few. I really need to read more but outside books are so tempting. I don't tend to get many but that'll probably change because I have been adding books I love to my wishlists for gifts. I'm curious what your goals are for next year. My favorite book was Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Kong. I read more borrowed books like I usually do. That copy of Pride and Prejudice looks really cool btw.

    1. Thanks, Adriana. I guess I somehow do but that's probably because I don't have access to any public library in my place. I think I saw Goodbye, Vitamin at my local bookstore and have been considering it generally because the title caught my attention. lol. Also, I really want to collect those edition of classics just because of how cool they look :)

  2. I need to go a few months without book buying. That's wonderful that you made it four months, then made up for it in twos days of buying books.I did purchase more than I read, hopefully this coming year I can change that. Looking forward to seeing your goals for 2019. Happy New Year.

The Wuthering Heights edition from Book Outlet is Paper Mill Press.

    1. I kind of want to schedule the months where I'll go without buying books. I kind of shamed myself for splurging on those months but 20% off booksales make me panic. lol.
I'll have my 2019 goals up by next week :)

Thanks, Jovita! I'm writing that down. I'm trying to collect different editions of Wuthering Heights :)

  3. I struggle with buying so many more books that I am able to read. I am working on it. You had a good year of reading and read a lot of books that you own. I hope 2019 is great for you!

    1. Thanks, Carole! I'm also trying to lessen my buying habits. It is kind of difficult when every time you drop by the bookstore, you see several books you want to own already. hahaha.
I hope the same for you! Happy New Year!

  4. Haha I'm always late with my wrap up posts which I do on my Instagram but better late than never right?? Since I use GR to keep track of my reading I always let it summarize my reading year! So handy~ It's hard not to buy more books than you read but I think you did well! I hope you reach all your goals in 2019 :)

  5. Honestly, the only reason I hit my reading goal on Goodreads last year was because I read a lot of poetry books. So I somehow cheated my way in achieving my reading goal. Also, I bought a lot of books last year, like around 50+ books. And they're just sitting on my shelf waiting for me to read them. On my defense, I was into reading Chinese web novels (translated ones) last year so maybe that's why I wasn't in the mood to read any YA novels. I fell into the wuxia and xianxia hole and until now, I'm still in it.

    1. Reading poetry is definitely not cheating :) You went to NBS's Book Binge Bazaar, right? lol. And here I thought I bought I a lot of books. Either way, at least you're enjoying what you're reading right now even though it's not YA novels. Definitely better than being in a slump :)
