M.J. Stark's life is perfect. But behind her success, there is a debilitating sense of loneliness. So when her boyfriend offers her a new life in California, she gives it a try. Once there, M.J. is left to fend for herself in a small beach town, with only the company of her elderly neighbor, Gloria.
One afternoon, M.J. discovers that Gloria has moved to Paris to honor a fifty-year-old pact. And in lieu of a good-bye, she's left an invitation to a secret club--one that reads only erotic books. Curious, M.J. accepts and meets the other members: Addie, who avoids responsibility at all costs. Britt, an overworked mom who's feeling lonely and desperate. And romantic Jules, whose fairy-tale life is slowly unraveling. As they bond over naughty bestsellers and the letters they inherit from the original club members, the strangers start to divulge the details of their own lives... and as they open up, they learn that friendship might be the key to rewriting their own stories.

The Dirty Book Club turned out better than what I expected. I read this mainly because it's a book by Lisi Harrison (and I loved her when I was younger). It follows M.J. as she makes life changing decisions likes leaving her work to live with her boyfriend in California where she meets Gloria who also gave a wild spin to her life--by inviting her to join The Dirty Book Club which as its name suggests, a book club that reads erotic books.

This really is a recommended book for those who enjoyed Lisi Harrison's middle grade book series, The Clique. It has a really great combination of humor and heartwarming moments. I was instantly in love with M.J. who never wanted to settle for anything less. And while her life spirals down, she breaks down but never gives up. Add to this the fabulous members of The Dirty Book Club which really made me miss The Pretty Committee -- the witty comebacks, the quirky characters, and the friendship built and strengthen throughout the novel.

Overall, The Dirty Book Club is an enjoyable chick-lit that may have the very typical story of a young woman who makes a big decision, falls down, regrets it, meets new people, gets out of her comfort zone, thought she found happiness but not, gets back up, and lives happily ever after. It feels like the usual formula but for me, it's all about the writing and the warmth the characters gave me.

*I read this book and wrote this review almost 3 years ago 😅😅😅

  1. I have never read anything by Harrison, but laughter and a warm heart are two things I look forward to when reading a book.
